Fostering Solar Technology in the Mediterranean Area: switch on cooperation!

Context

The Mediterranean region is characterized by the significant potential of solar energy. The sunlight time ranges from 2650 to 3400 hours per year with average radiation going up to 3200 kWh/m2 per year. In 2007 the European Council adopted an ambitious energy and climate change objectives for 2020 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, rising to 30% if the conditions are right, to increase the share of renewable energy to 20%, and to make a 20% improvement in energy efficiency. This strategy is addressed both to the EU State Members and to the Neighbouring Countries. In particular, among the different renewable energy technologies, solar-related technologies have a special relevance in the Mediterranean region, which is one of the best locations in the world for the implementation of solar technologies as it is characterized by excellent solar conditions. Despite the favorable weather conditions, the development of solar energy in the Mediterranean area is still limited by technical, institutional, financial and market barriers.

Important issues in the field of solar energy have not yet been sufficiently addressed at regional level and cross-border strategic approach is required within the Mediterranean area.

FOSTEr in MED project is funded under the ENPI CBC Med Programme, the total budget of the project is 4,5 million Euro and it is financed for an amount of 4,05 million Euro by the European Union through the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.”

Objectives

FOSTEr in MED  project aims to promote the adoption of innovative solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies in the Mediterranean area. The project adopts a multi-layer strategic approach, with the involvement of the local stakeholders, in order to ensure that the results of the project activities will have a multiplicative effect at the Mediterranean Basin level, in terms of outcomes replication, dissemination and transferability of results both beyond the partnership and after the end of the Project.

The Specific Objective of the Project is to transfer the know how in the solar energy innovative field, to implement and promote a shared design methodology and to promote Solar Energy innovative technologies at civil society level.
